The Roell lab aims to advance the process of industrial fermentation, a method widely used to produce valuable goods such as pharmaceuticals, vitamins, and polymers. While this process is sustainable and provides a stable supply chain for essential materials, lengthy and costly R&D phases pose significant barriers to market entry. To overcome this challenge, our research focuses on the development of tools to leverage bioreactor operations, fermentation results, and omics data to generate actionable insights. The platforms we develop not only assist in large-scale data generation but also explore novel applications that will allow the field to realize the full potential of synthetic biology.

ABOUT GARRETT
Garrett Roell is an Assistant Professor in the College
of Tropical
Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR) in
the Department of Molecular Biosciences &
Bioengineering at
the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa.
Previously, Garrett earned his Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis in Yinjie Tang’s Group. While working
on his degree, Garrett earned a DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Award that allowed him to work
at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab with Hector García Martín.
